Wolverhampton win for Coppersmith

By John Scanlon

Coppersmith had won on his belated racecourse debut at Kempton on February 3. The form of that race has been working out well, with the second and the third-placed horses both winning maidens next time out. Stepping up from a mile to nine and a half furlongs, Coppersmith attempted to follow up on that win when taking on 10rivals in a restricted novice event at Wolverhampton on March 11. With Joe Fanning out of action, Billy Loughnane took over in the saddle on the Mastercraftsman colt.

Quickly away, Coppersmith disputed the early lead with Scottish Breeze until that gelding eased into the lead after a furlong or so. Travelling sweetly in second, Coppersmith took the lead with just under three furlongs to run and came into the straight a length clear of Galactic Charm. Coppersmith kept on well to the line, scoring by two and a quarter lengths from Galactic Charm, with Worrals finishing third, a further length and three-quarters in arrears.

Unfortunately, the colt sustained an injury in winning and has since undergone an operation at Newmarket Equine Hospital, from which we hope he makes a full recovery.
