The Champions and the Legend

What a day for the team!

Johnston Racing and jockey Joe Fanning enjoyed a fantastic day at the All-Weather Championships Finals Day at Lingfield Park on April 19.
First, John Barson’s evergreen Dansili gelding, Watersmeet, now eight years young, produced a fantastic display to land the All-Weather Marathon Championships Conditions Stakes, winning comfortably by two and a quarter lengths from the hot favourite, Amade.

Then, in a red-hot renewal of the Easter Classic All-Weather Middle Distance Championships Conditions Stakes, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed’s Matterhorn (pictured above) turned in a stunning performance to claim the £124,500 prize, slamming the long odds-on favourite Wissahickon by seven lengths.
Joe Fanning was the successful jockey on both horses, whose wins once again sealed the All-Weather Trainers’ Championship for Mark. For good measure, Matterhorn’s win also secured the Winning-most horse title for the Raven’s Pass colt.
Sandwiched between the two Lingfield wins, was another success for the team, courtesy of Living Legend at Bath. Barbara and Alick Richmond’s three-year-old Camelot colt battled hard to deny former stable companion, Pablo Escobarr, the win of the Class 2, 11.5-furlong handicap. Franny Norton partnered Living Legend in this third career win from only four starts.
Congratulations to all involved!
