The bonus king!

One of the more successful initiatives in the world of racing and bloodstock in recent years has been the £25,000 Tattersalls October Book 1 Bonus.

Launched in 2015, the scheme allows purchasers of horses at Book 1 of Tattersalls October Yearling Sale to win a cash prize of £25,000, should one of their purchases go on to win one of over 300 juvenile races eligible for the bonus payout.

With this year’s sale scheduled to take place on October 9-11, we thought the time was right to highlight that Mark Johnston has won the Book 1 Bonus eight times. In recent years, Mark has trained the following horses who received payouts under the scheme:

Horse Purchase Price (gns) Earned (£)
Nayef Road 100,000 32,115
Persian Moon 40,000 29,787
Elarqam 1,600,000 40,262
Main Edition 62,000 31,728
Poet’s Prince 28,000 29,269
Nyaleti 40,000 35,350
Mistime 23,000 29,528
Kilmah 32,000 37,028

The ‘earned’ figures show the total amount won by the named horse in the race in which it won the Book 1 bonus; thus it can be seen that, by winning their bonus race alone, Poet’s Prince, Mistime and Kilmah put their respective owners into profit. One should also note that Mark has claimed the prize five times with horses acquired for 40,000gns or less. In total, 25 horses who cost 50,000gns or less have scooped the bonus, so for 20% of them to have been Kingsley Park graduates underlines Mark’s good judgement as the sale.

As well as offering owners a decent chance to enjoy a significant return on their investment, the scheme has worked beautifully for Tattersalls in that it has highlighted to buyers that the sale is not just for the giants of the bloodstock world. There is real value to be had at the middle and lower end of the market, especially if you have Mark Johnston’s judgement working for you.
