Loyal Touch wins under Archie Young

By John Scanlon

At Newcastle on March 15, Johnston Racing Loyal Touch won a handicap over a mile and a quarter to land his first racecourse success since November 2022. The No Nay Never gelding had made his seasonal debut at Lingfield in an apprentice handicap under Archie Young at the beginning of the month, finishing eighth of nine runners.

Turned out quickly again at Newcastle, Loyal Touch faced nine rivals, including Isle of Sark, who was sent off favourite after his exploits at Southwell. Archie retained the ride.

Swiss Money made the early running, but Loyal Touch nosed into the lead after a couple of furlongs, dictating a steady pace. Turning for home in the lead, Loyal Touch raced towards the centre of the track, as Isle of Sark and Geremia launched challenges on the stands’ side.

The race turned into something of a sprint finish, and Loyal Touch kept finding more for Archie Young, holding off the determined challenge of Isle of Sark by a short head, with Geremia finishing half a length back in third.

Loyal Touch was a useful juvenile, placed in a decent maiden at Glorious Goodwood before scoring at Carlisle and Kempton. An October Book 1 Yearling sale purchase, it’s good to see him back in the winning groove.
