Fox Flame wins at Southwell

By John Scanlon

The first winner of March for Johnston Racing came at Southwell on the fifth of the month with a horse owned by the yard, the four-year-old Iffraaj filly Fox Flame.

She had finished fourth over a mile and three-quarters at Wolverhampton in February and later that month stepped down in trip to a mile and a half at Kempton, finishing third. At Southwell she was among 10 runners in a handicap over a mile and three furlongs, and Jason Hart took the ride.

The filly was one of the first to break from the stalls, but on settling down she raced among horses, disputing third and fourth. Turning for home there were plenty of horses in with a chance. Fox Flame nosed into the lead with two furlongs to run, but Isle of Sark, closest to the far rail when coming into the straight, looked a huge danger.

That gelding began to hang badly to the right, hampering Golden Delite and carrying Fox Flame across the track. At the line, Isle of Sark passed the post a neck and three-quarters of a length ahead of Fox Flame, but the Johnston filly won the race in the stewards’ room.

This was the fourth career success for Fox Flame, and her second win at Southwell.
