A day to remember for MJR award winner Barry Lusted

MJR groom-rider Barry Lusted won the MJR Employee of the Quarter award earlier this year. The award was initiated by Mark and Deirdre to acknowledge and celebrate ongoing excellence in performance among the staff team. Every member of staff can nominate an employee in each quarter whom they feel deserves recognition.
The winner is selected by Mark and Deirdre on the basis of votes received and reasons for nomination. He was the third staff member to land the accolade (Ruth Burn and Darren Foster were the first two winners and Elaine Thompson is the latest), which is sponsored by the Wensleydale Heifer. The generous sponsorship of the award-winning boutique hotel and seafood restaurant in West Witton, brings a prize of dinner for two for the MJR winners.
The winner also receives 200 staff points, which can be used in acquiring branded clothing, and gets to spend a day at the races as a guest of Mark, effectively being treated as an owner.
Barry’s Yard Manager at Kingsley Park is Andy Larnach who, when it was announced that Barry had got the prize, said: “Barry is a lovely quiet rider who is great on fresh horses. He’s a great all-rounder, a good timekeeper, a grafter and a lovely lad who is very popular with all the staff. He’s a proper horseman and he has been a great help to me in my yard, and is gradually taking on more and more responsibility. I’m delighted he is being honoured in this way and I know it will mean the world to him.”
On Thursday July 6, Barry flew from Kingsley Park to Haydock with Mark and Joe Fanning (pictured above at Haydock), and then went on to Epsom’s evening meeting. Star Of Lombardy won the first race on the card at Epsom and Barry was asked to receive the prize on behalf of Paul Dean, the filly’s owner. Following the presentation, Barry was invited for a glass of champagne by Epsom committee member Tim Syder.
Barry, who was travelling for the first time in a “small” plane, thoroughly enjoyed his day with Mark. Back in Middleham, Barry said: “Today has been a fantastic experience that I will never forget. Following Mark to the winner’s enclosure at Epsom, it was great to hear so many racegoers congratulating him along the way.
“From the dinner at the Wensleydale Heifer to flying to race meetings, having a nice lunch at Haydock and celebrating a winner at Epsom with a glass of champagne, the prize for winning the Employee of the Quarter award has been wonderful.”
