Deal Maker, our first juvenile winner

By John Scanlon

Deal Maker became the yard’s first juvenile winner of 2024 when landing the five-furlong fillies’ novice stakes at Southwell on March 31.

The Profitable filly, bred by Alan Spence and owned jointly by Alan with John Connolly, faced six rivals on Southwell’s Tapeta track, including Chalena, who had made her debut over course and distance some five days previously.

Ridden by Jason Hart, Deal Maker was quickly into stride and raced prominently in the centre of the track. Chalena was a marginal leader, with Violet Love and Awj tracking the front pair.

With just over a furlong to go, Deal Maker moved into the lead from Awj. Violet Love came with a challenge towards the inner, but Deal Maker was always doing enough and scored by three-quarters of a length from Violet Love, with Awj finishing a length back in third.

This was a decent win for Deal Maker, who is out of the Street Cry mare, Street Fire. A late February foal, Deal Maker is a half-sister to no fewer than four winners, including Salute The Soldier, by Sepoy, whose 10 career wins include two Group 1 wins over a mile and a quarter at Meydan, and Fox Flame, by Iffraaj, whose four wins for the stable have come in staying events.
