Consistent Dancer lands £100k bonus

By John Scanlon

The stayers’ handicap at Southwell on March 28 held a special significance for the owners of the ultra-consistent Artisan Dancer. For if the gelding could finish in the first four, he would land the £100,000 bonus for finishing as the All Weather Championship Horse Of The Year for his owners, The Makyowners.

A field of just six runners went to post, with Jason Hart entrusted with the ride on Artisan Dancer.

It looked promising a furlong out, when Artisan Dancer came to challenge Tradesman and Wonderful Eagle, but two of his opponents proved just too strong for him on this occasion. However, in finishing third, Artisan Dancer sealed the Horse Of The Year award, triggering a generous payout to his delighted owners by the Arena Racing Company (ARC).

In the immediate aftermath of the race, Charlie Johnston paid tribute to the horse.

‘He has a wonderful constitution,’ Charlie told the Klarion.

‘It’s really quite a feat. To be in contention you really have to run every 10 days across five months, and in his case most of those races were over a mile and three-quarters or two miles. Artisan Dancer scored points in every one of his 15 races within the Championship.’

Looking at his campaign as a whole, Artisan Dancer won twice, finished second seven times and was third four times. His handicap rating rose from 68 in October to the mark of 84, off which he raced at Southwell.

It was Charlie’s idea to target the bonus, and connections were delighted to see the plan come to fruition. Credit goes to the game and robust Mastercraftsman gelding, who has now won five of his 26 career starts, all of them achieved on all-weather surfaces.
